Happy holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! What greeting is the most inclusive during this holiday season?
Now, in Latin America 90% of the population is Christian (mainly Catholic) so the majority of people might be accustomed to saying, “Merry Christmas” but in the United States only 64% of the population is Christian. Let’s say you work at an international company. According to Wikipedia 31% of the world is Christian, 24% Muslim, 16% unaffiliated, 15% Hindu, 7% Buddhist, and 6-7% other (including Jewish).
If someone celebrates Hanukkah, Eid al-Fitr, Kwanzaa, Makar Sankranti or another religious holiday then saying, “Merry Christmas” to them could make them feel their religious or cultural holiday celebration and values are being demeaned or dismissed. So, if you aren’t sure what someone celebrates it’s helpful to use a more all-encompassing greeting or sign off on your emails. “Happy Holidays” is considered the most inclusive greeting during this time of the year.
What really matters the most is you’re wishing another person a pleasant and enjoyable moment during this festive time of the year. Here are some other alternatives you can use if you want to acknowledge that different folks celebrate different holidays. Of course, feel free to add an exclamation point to portray enthusiasm and emotion!
